In Eugene’s wet climate, a branch resting on or hanging over your roof does more damage than most people realize. Clearance pruning is one of the simplest, most cost-effective services we offer.
Problems overhanging branches cause
Moss and rot. Shade and dripping water keep shingles wet, which speeds up moss growth and roof wear.
Clogged gutters. Needles, leaves, and cones fill gutters fast, leading to overflow and water damage at the fascia and foundation.
Abrasion. Branches rubbing in the wind scrape granules off shingles.
Storm damage. A limb resting a few feet above the roof has very little distance to build momentum, but a large one breaking higher up can puncture it.
Pest access. Rats, squirrels, and carpenter ants use branches as bridges into attics.
How much clearance?
A common goal is several feet of clearance above and to the side of the roof, enough that branches won’t touch even when they’re loaded with rain or swaying in wind. The right amount depends on the species, growth rate, and how the tree will respond to the cuts.
Done right, not hacked back
Clearance pruning should cut branches back to a proper union or lateral, not leave stubs at the roofline. Stub cuts sprout dense regrowth that’s right back on the roof in a couple of seasons.
Pair it with gutter season
Scheduling clearance pruning in the fall, before leaf and needle drop and winter storms, gets you the most benefit.
