Dense Young Douglas-Fir Plantings Can Increase Wildfire Risk

Throughout Eugene and the surrounding Willamette Valley, young Douglas-fir trees are often planted or naturally regenerate at very high densities. While a thick stand of young trees may look healthy and productive, excessive density can create conditions that increase wildfire intensity and make fire more difficult to control.

Young Douglas-firs growing close together create continuous fuel from tree to tree. Their lower branches often overlap, while dead twigs, needles, and suppressed branches accumulate beneath the canopy. During Oregon’s dry summer months, this material can become highly combustible.

One of the biggest concerns is vertical fuel continuity, commonly called ladder fuels. Grasses, shrubs, dead branches, and low Douglas-fir limbs can allow a surface fire to climb into the canopy. Once fire reaches the crowns of densely spaced conifers, flames can move rapidly between neighboring trees.

High-density stands also create intense competition for water, sunlight, and nutrients. As Douglas-firs compete, weaker trees become suppressed and lower branches die. That produces additional dead woody material precisely where we don’t want it during fire season.

Strategic thinning can substantially change these conditions. Removing suppressed, poorly formed, damaged, or overcrowded trees creates separation between crowns and reduces the amount of available fuel. Pruning appropriate lower limbs and managing woody debris can further interrupt the pathway a fire would use to move from the ground into the canopy.

The objective isn’t necessarily to remove Douglas-firs—it is to develop a healthier, better-spaced stand with reduced fuel continuity.
